Kid Finders Network Update

Lately, I’ve been receiving a lot of traffic and comments on this blog from folks who are curious about my connection to Kid Finders Network. Seems like followers of the Caylee Anthony missing child case, have been Googling information about Kid Finders and have found my old blog posts. Like many of you, I too have been watching in wonderment at the latest controversy surrounding them. This post is for you, those who want to know how Kid Finders Network came into our lives.

The date was July 2008, I received an email through Myspace from a friend, the sister of a missing person, Heather Riggio. She told me about Kid Finders and how they were doing a mobile billboard for Heather. She suggested I contact them to see if they’d be willing to do the same for Lilly. To my surprise, a few days later, I received an email from Sherri Milstead of Kid Finders. She told me about her organization and the work they were doing for Heather Riggio’s case. She explained that along with the mobile billboard, they did press conferences to raise awareness in the community. She offered their services for Lilly. I was very excited about the possibility and immediately notified Lilly’s mother.

A short time later (about a week), I received another email from Sherri. She asked me if I could meet her the following morning at the North Miami Beach Police station, where they were having a press conference for Heather Riggio. She wanted to talk about Lilly’s case. I agreed and contacted Lilly’s mother to go with me.

About 10am on Friday July 11th, we drove to the police station. We saw the mobile billboard for Heather parked out in front of the building on the busy Avenue. Lucely (Lilly’s mother) and I met Sherri and Dennis Milstead moments before the press conference took place. (Pictured above) We watched as everyone exited the station and took their place in front of the mobile billboard. We listened to detectives and Kid Finders speak, we watched as reporters for the Miami Herald and WSVN Channel 7 asked their questions. It was a tough moment us. Although we felt happy for Heather and her family, we could not escape feelings of sadness for Lilly. Quietly, we fell to the background and took a seat.

A short time later, we had our meeting with Sherri and Dennis. They seemed nice and willing to help. They assured us that they would do the same for Lilly. They said it would not be long before the billboard would be ready with Lilly’s picture and information. Dennis gave us each his invention, Safety in a Flash. After conversing for some 45 minutes, Lucely and I left our meeting hopeful.

On July 19th, I got an email from Sherri. She assured me that she did not forget about Lilly. And went on to explain that they were being pulled away to Orlando for a Missing 2 year old girl named Caylee Anthony. She said “As you know we are KID Finders Network and small children take precidence but rest assured we are still working on getting a mobile billboard out for Lily as fast as we can.

That was the last I heard from Sherri and Kid Finders Network. My emails to Sherri haven’t been answered. But this is the kind of thing I’ve grown used to. I’m sure she’s been really busy with the whole Caylee Anthony search.

But the fact remains, my dear friend, Lilly Aramburo is still missing… just like little Caylee. But NO ONE, not one organization is volunteering to search for Lilly Aramburo or doing anything at all for her or her 2 year old son.

Roses, Balloons and Prayers for Lilly Aramburo

We had an amazing vigil for Lilly today. Lucely, Lily’s mother came out with the baby (Lily’s 2 year old son) despite feeling ill & being feverish. She brought Lilly’s grandmother and cousin, too. We were so delighted to see them. Baby Palden has grown so much and he’s talking like crazy! He is identical to Lily. He’s super charismatic and gorgeous! He helped my girls make a heart in the sand made from yellow, pink and purple roses. (pictured above) We looked at Lily’s baby pictures & pictures of her growing up, released balloons, and dedicated prayers. It was all very harmonious.

Joe Carrillo, (the pi working her case) couldn’t make it due to a trial he’s preparing for tomorrow but he provided a prayer for me to read at the vigil. I read it and everyone stood in solidarity. Joe also requested for everyone to please pray for their efforts. (I’m asking too!) Here’s the prayer:

O, Blessed Mother and St Joseph,
you searched when your Son Jesus
disappeared when he was twelve.
You would not give up
until he was found.
You know the pain of having someone missing,
and the joy of finding them,
as you found your son.
Help those who are searching now,
to find the answers to their questions,
and an end to their searching.
Inspire people to be vigilant,
so that their eyes and ears
may see and hear news that will bring hope.
Comfort those who feel lonely and sad
because the one they love has vanished.
Be with them in the storm
and guide them in their efforts.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

Isn’t it lovely? We’re very fortunate to have you on our side. Thank you so much, Joe.

I really appreciate each and everyone who came out to Miami Beach today to show your support and love for Lily. Thanks so much to Carmen for being there for us, you’re a godsend. For those who couldn’t make it, we’d be so grateful if you could please light a candle and dedicate a prayer for Lily. Thank you for your loving kindness and compassion on this special day.

Desperately Seeking Heather Riggio

Heather Riggio Missing from North Miami Beach, FL

Thankfully, a few media outlets picked up Heather’s story. The Miami Herald wrote a good article about it on today’s paper. The writer, David Ovalle, included very helpful information about the Kid Finders Network. As he writes:

“The billboard is being provided to North Miami Beach police by the Kid Finders Ntework, a West Palm Beach-based volunteer organization run by Sherri and Dennis Milstead. Kid Finders, which relies on donations, provides mobile billboards aimed at finding missing young people. The price of Riggio’s mobile billboard — the printing of the banner and trailer upkeep — is about $3,000, footed so far by the Milsteads. ”We work off donations and we’re still trying to get sponsors,” Sherri Milstead said.“We’re hanging by a shoestring.”

Here’s another article and video about Heather on CBS4. And another one on WSVN including video, as well. You can find more information about Heather Riggio’s case by doing a Google search. There’s over 26,000 pages of search results.

This from Heather’s sister’s Myspace page http://www.myspace.com/heathersmissing “We want as many people as possible to see her picture and know her story…But we need help…we need people to donate gas money and driving time to keep the billboard running…PLEASE contact Sherry @ 561-333-2779 if you can do anything..anything at all helps..thanks a lot, Lisa”. As you can see that Heather’s family is torn up and suffering dearly for the return of their precious “Kitty”.  See more picture of Heather here. If you have any information, anything at all, please contact North Miami Beach Police at 305-949-5500.

Kid Finders Network and North Miami Beach Police join forces to spotlight missing person Heather Riggio

This morning I attended a Press Conference held by the North Miami Beach Police and Kid Finders Network for missing person, Heather “Kitty” Riggio. I was invited by Sherri Milstead, the Executive Director of Kid Finders Network. She learned about Lilly’s case and contacted me earlier in the week.

Kid Finders Network is a nonprofit organization which provides mobile billboards to families, organizations and Law Agencies in search of Missing Children and Missing Persons.  They have a mobile billboard (pictured above) with Heather’s information and picture on it. It will stay at the police station in North Miami Beach until Monday. After that it will go to the area where Heather was last seen at in Homestead. It will cruise the area, increasing the odds of someone calling with an important tip. The drivers are trained in taking tips, too. You can see my entire set of pictures of the press conference and the mobile billboard by clicking the link under the picture.

Lilly’s mom and I could not contain our tears as we watched the press conference taking place. You can’t help but feel overwhelmed with compassion for families experiencing the same suffering.  It was heartbreaking. But at the same time, I saw the dedication and all the effort put forth by the detectives from North Miami Beach Police Department. What a blessing for Heather’s family. I’ve been following her case and from the start, these detectives have done such a great job. I admire and commend them for their commitment and efforts to find Heather. They were able to get her story featured on America’s Most Wanted.

Here is the official press release from the North Miami Beach Police Department. They have it posted on their website:

Birthday Vigil for Lilly Aramburo Sunday in Miami Beach

Dear friends,

Sunday, November 16th is Lilly’s birthday. She would have been turning 25 years old. Lilly has been heavy on my mind more than ever as time passes and she is yet to be found. It’s heartbreaking to know it’s been more than 16 months since we saw Lilly’s sweet smile or listened to her kind words. Her absence is felt every day by many who knew and loved her. It’s frustrating having no idea if or what the authorities are doing anymore. What we do know is her investigation was not handled as they should have in the beginning. Having to endure constant comments about adults having a right to go missing, Lilly’s case went cold fast. Every day more time passes without answers, without clues. Disillusioned by law enforcement, I place all my trust in karma. Justice will prevail.

Everyone is invited to join us this Sunday for a Birthday Vigil in Lilly’s honor on her 25th birthday in Miami Beach. We will gather on 80th Street & Collins Ave to celebrate Lilly’s life in the company of family and friends who love and miss her dearly. Bring a candle and a prayer, together we can start the healing process.

Sadly, life hasn’t been the same since June 2, 2007. It won’t ever be back to normal until the truth about what happened comes to light and the persons who did this are brought to justice. Lily will always remain in our hearts and minds. Karma Drolkar, forever a yogini…(Yogini is an enlightened woman with spiritual powers and deep insight.)

Domestic Violence Awareness and Twitter

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. As an ode to Lilly, I’ve been using Twitter to highlight the issue. You too can take a stand and Share Your Voice with America. If you’re a blogger, blog about it, educate your readers. Make a statement that stopping domestic violence should be a community priority. Raising awareness is not brain surgery, anyone can do it. If you use Twitter, you can follow @yogini to receive my updates. Also, please consider joining the Million Voices Campaign, the campaign to end domestic violence through the National Domestic Violence Hotline. And please follow them on Twitter @MillionVoices

Domestic violence is a pattern of coercive behavior designed to exert power and control over a person in an intimate relationship through the use of intimidating, threatening, harmful, or harassing behavior. Including, multiple forms of physical abuse, sexual, and emotional or psychological abuse. Domestic violence is a crime. It affects everyone, our families, communities and our workplaces. Yet violence against women is often ignored and rarely punished.

The statistics of domestic violence are staggering! According to the U.S. Justice Department, one in four American women have experienced domestic violence directly, and more than half of all Americans (56 percent) say they have at least one friend, relative or co-worker whom they know has been involved in domestic violence. On average, more than 3 women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends in this country every day. Women are much more likely than men to be killed by an intimate partner.

Domestic abuse may escalate from threats and verbal abuse to violence and murder. Injuries & death are the ultimate consequence but the emotional and psychological consequences of domestic violence can also leave lasting scars. No one should have to live with this kind of suffering.

If you’re a victim of domestic violence, there is help. Please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233). Trained advocates are available 24 hours a day/365 days a year. They can refer you to resources available in your area.

The hotline was established in 1996 as a component to the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) passed by Congress. VAWA was drafted by Senator Joseph Biden with support from a number of advocacy organizations. There is a safe way out. Start by calling the hotline. It may be a start to a new life, without violence. If you are living with your abusive partner, you should have a safety plan in place.

Where to go for Help:

If you are in immediate danger or have been hurt, call 911. Remember, domestic violence, any kind of physical assault or abuse is a crime. Police are required to

In closing, here’s a poem written by Lilly in 2006 when she was pregnant and spending time with my family at our Miami Beach apartment. Lilly, there’s not a day that goes by that we don’t think about you and miss you!

Sometimes,
in the distance, beneath my mind,
I felt things like cold hands and teeth chattering.
I could barely make out its sounds
but it soothed me somehow,
it was light and translucent.

and Sometimes,
as I slept,
I felt a horrible black ghost pushing down on my chest,
It violated me.
and it told me things.

I have never been the same!

and sometimes,
I dream of flat green prairies that stretch out for days
and crash into the violet lining of the sky in a perfect display of interdependence.

and sometimes,
when I go to sleep at night,
I feel the warmth of womb
and the beating of a heart inside of me, and feel at peace.

Lilly Aramburo’s Front Page Article on Miami New Times Puts Miami Police on Notice!

Wake up, South Florida! Lilly Aramburo is one of 5,000 people a year reported gone without a trace in Miami-Dade County.

Today, Lilly Aramburo’s story is featured on the front cover of the Miami New Times. The article appropriately titled
“Missing Peace” was written by Francisco Alvarado. I must say, he did a pretty thorough job. Much more thorough than Miami Dade Police! (Frank deserves many props!)

He accomplished the seemingly impossible…he tracked down Christen Pacheco and got his side of the story. He interviewed Kelly Starling and a neighbor of Christen’s who knew them and happened to talk to Lilly just before she vanished. I can’t help but wonder, how many resources did it take? Was it costly? Did it take that much time and trouble?

According to the article, “police inaction is one reason she hasn’t been found.” Amen to that! Even Christen Pacheco admits he’s spoken to a detective only once by phone since the initial report. Kelly Starling says she’s tried contacting the detective several times but he’s never returned the calls. She says “no one has been trying to do anything. I’ve been wanting to talk to the detective all this time.”

Captain Janna Bollinger-Heller from the Miami Dade County Police domestic crimes bureau was interviewed. She says Lilly’s case “has been a high priority.” “We have followed up on every lead.” Interesting…

Miami Residents, are you outraged? This could be your child or relative! They believe they have treated Lilly’s case with priority? If speaking with the last person to see her alive once by phone is priority, then I’d hate to even think about the cases that have not been a high priority.
If what Captain Bollinger-Heller says is true and there are only 4 detectives in Miami Dade for the 5000 reported cases of missing people, then how on earth are they supposed to be found?

I have a solution. Why don’t they classify Lilly’s case and others that qualify as homicides? They obviously have more detectives in Homicide. Besides, they have much more training and are better prepared to deal with these kinds of investigations.

The family of a missing woman hopes a $1,000 dollar reward can help bring her back. Viridiana Maldonado’s, 21, has been missing since October.

She was last seen at her North Charleston apartment.

Police said at a news conference Thursday morning they don’t think she left home on her own free will. They’re hoping someone will know where she is.

Maldonado’s sister says she’s been getting text messages from her sister that don’t sound right. A translator for the sister of Maldonado says, “The way she sent those text messages is not her … She never asked for her children, you know, like text messaging: ‘How are the kids doing?’ or ‘Take care of them.’ Because if she left, she would know the kids had to stay with somebody. I don’t think the mother would just leave the kids not knowing what’s going to happen to them.”

If you know where to find Viridiana Maldonado, call the Comen Detective Agency at 571-2667.

A $1,000 reward is being offered if she is found by midnight on January 10th.

Sign Missing Persons Day Petition – Change the World!

Consider this. On any given day, there are as many as 100,000 active missing person cases in the United States, and every year, tens of thousands of people vanish under suspicious circumstances.

According the FBI, National Crime Information Center (NCIC) there are 105,229 active missing adult cases in the United States as of 1/1/2008. And 6,954 active cases of unidentified persons. Keep in mind, it is not yet mandated by law for law enforcement to include the Unidentified persons into the NCIC database. Many cases are never reported to law enforcement or entered into the NCIC. If it were fully utilized to its potential can you imagine the results?

With that said, take a moment to reflect on all the missing children, missing mothers, all the countless missing…worldwide. Think of their mothers, family & friends – what must it feel like to realize your loved one has VANISHED. I understand that this is not something you may enjoy doing. Ordinary folks don’t think of such depressing things. But can you just imagine for a second, the hell it must be to not know where you’re son/daughter is? The panic, fear & rush of thoughts, are they being harmed; are they alive/dead…? What a helpless & horrific experience for a human being to have to endure! Every missing child and adult is someone’s son or daughter, wife/husband, sister, grandmother, friend; This is an enormous problem throughout the world.

How about signing a petition for a Missing Persons Day to honor the missing and their families? I think it would be very helpful. The petition has the potential of making that day manifest! It would emphasize awareness of the suffering families around the world experience on a daily basis and encourage conversation and media attention (needed so desperately). It would help create change. No matter what country you live in, sign it and kindly forward to your friends. You can make a difference right now.
